Frequently Asked Questions about Implants
What is a contraceptive injection?
This is a small flexible silicone rod (smaller and thinner than a matchstick) that is placed under the skin of the upper arm to effectively prevent pregnancy for up to 5years. An example is Implanon NXT that lasts for 3 years and Jadelle that lasts for 5 years
How does the contraceptive implant like Jadelle or Implanon NXT work?
It works by releasing very low doses of the hormone for 3 to 5 years. This is similar to taking the contraceptive pill daily for 3 to 5 years. This hormone prevents ovulation, and thickens cervical mucus so it is difficult for sperm to swim through thus preventing fertilization and pregnancy.
Do you have to undergo any pelvic or breast exam before you use an implant?
NO, you do not need any of such examinations before receiving JADELLE implants.
How long do implants work?
JADELLE is currently labelled for up to 5 years of continuous use, so you can use JADELLE for 5 years or less. WHILE IMPLANON NXT is labelled for up to 3 years of continuous use, so you can use IMPLANON NXT for 3 years or less.
How soon are you protected?
You are protected after 24 hours of inserting JADELLE but remember that unless you use a condom as well, you are NOT protected from STI’s or HIV (AIDS).
Does it hurt to have implant inserted and removed?
A local anaesthetic is always given before insertion so you can chat with your provider during the insertion process. Most women say it doesn’t hurt as much as they expected even after the anaesthetic wears off although removal may hurt a bit more than insertion.
Will you have a scar?
You will possibly have a tiny scar after the implant is inserted and then covered with plaster and a small bandage. This process takes 5 to 10 minutes and is not a major surgery.
Will JADELLE implant be visible after insertion?
NO, not unless you are VERY thin but you can always feel it with your fingers under your skin.
Do you need a follow up visit to my doctor?
You do not need a follow up visit after inserting JADELLE unless you have any concerns.
Will implants make you infertile?
Your fertility resumes with normal bleeding patterns after removal of JADELLE or IMPLANON NXT implants and you will be able to get pregnant again.
Can implant move around your body?
No it cannot move around your body, but very rarely a rod may start to come out of the scar because it was not inserted correctly in the first place or because infection has occurred. This may occur (in the first 4 months) so go straight to the doctor.
